Malawi Chair - Natural

The skill in making and weaving Malawi chairs is a long labour intensive process  which takes months of planning.

The Tiliaceae shrub is used as jute for the weaving of the chairs. The shrub only grows in the summer months and the long roots are harvested, coiled and dried. 

In the winter months there is no material available to weave these chairs, therefore weaving is limited to about 8 months of the year.

The skill & materials make these chairs  extremely hard wearing and strong.

The chairs can take damp– but drying quickly is essential, as organic products  must not stay damp for long periods.
